Let’s
Talk About Homework…
Many of our class
assignments build on one another – students need the skills and practice from
one assignment before being successful on the next assignment. This is why
students need to complete assignments on time. I try to allow enough time during
class for students to complete assignments. I also offer 15 minutes of “study
time” at the end of the day for students to complete any missing work and get
extra help from me. If students still need extra time to complete an assignment,
they are welcome to stay in during recess (as long as I don’t have recess
duty) and/or take the assignment home for homework. I’m also in the classroom
before and after school if a student wants to finish an assignment at school.
Often we have "Free Time Fridays." At the end of the week, students may have 15-20 minutes of free time if all their work is completed. If a student has missing work, this is the time to complete it.
My goals are:
Second chances:
I also want to offer students every opportunity to succeed, and everyone
deserves a second chance. If a student wants to make corrections on a daily
assignment, he/she can turn in the corrections for ˝ credit (because who
hasn’t bombed an assignment before? I know I have!).
What you can do:
Encourage your child to read every day -- even if it's only for 5 minutes. Read anything: books, magazines, cookbooks, newspapers, comic strips, sports scores, anything!
Encourage your child to use math every day: keep score, count steps, tell time, measure ingredients, add/subtract money, etc.
Make sure you child gets enough sleep and starts the day with a good breakfast.
Thanks for supporting
your child’s learning! If you have any questions, please contact me.
