Snow Ice Cream

Recently our class made Snow Ice Cream. It was fun and the students loved it! Here is the recipe for one serving (one very small serving!):

Materials:

  • One gallon-size zipper-lock bag
  • Two quart-size zipper-lock bags
  • Snow
  • Six tablespoons salt
  • 1/2 cup Half & Half
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • One Tablespoon sugar
  • mittens

Instructions:

1. Fill the gallon-size bag half full with snow. Add salt. Seal the bag and mix for a few minutes. Wear your mittens -- it gets cold!

2. In one of the quart-size zipper-lock bags, mix the Half & Half, sugar and vanilla. Seal tightly, allowing as little air to remain in the bag as possible.

3. Place sealed bag of ingredients in the second quart bag. Seal tightly, squeezing out as much air as possible. (We double bagged the ingredients in case one leaked). Place the quart bags in the gallon bag of snow. Squeeze out the air and seal tightly.

4. With your mittens on, shake and squeeze the bag, making sure the snow surrounds the cream mixture. Keep mixing for 10 or 12 minutes or until the cream mixture freezes.

5. Carefully remove the center bag. Ta da! You made snow ice cream!
